New Delhi: Proceedings in Parliament were repeatedly disrupted on Tuesday as a sharp confrontation erupted between the government and the Opposition, with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi at the centre of a heated exchange. The standoff led to noisy scenes in both Houses, forcing adjournments and stalling legislative business for hours.
The tension escalated after Rahul Gandhi raised pointed questions on governance, accountability, and recent policy decisions, demanding clear answers from the ruling dispensation. Opposition members backed his remarks with slogans and protests, accusing the government of avoiding debate on matters of public concern.
The treasury benches strongly objected to the tone and content of the Opposition’s statements, alleging that parliamentary norms were being violated. Senior ministers responded by defending the government’s record and accused the Opposition of deliberately disrupting proceedings instead of engaging in constructive discussion.
Amid the chaos, the Speaker and the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha repeatedly appealed to members to maintain order and allow the House to function. Despite assurances from both sides, disruptions continued, leading to multiple adjournments.
Outside Parliament, political tempers remained high, with leaders from rival parties trading sharp remarks. The ruling party maintained that it was open to debate but would not tolerate what it termed “baseless allegations,” while the Opposition insisted that raising uncomfortable questions was its democratic right.
With several important bills and discussions pending, the repeated disruptions have raised concerns about the smooth functioning of the ongoing session. Parliamentary affairs officials indicated that efforts would be made to restore order and ensure that crucial legislative business is taken up in the coming days.
