New Delhi: The Lok Sabha was adjourned on Tuesday amid sustained protests by Opposition members, leading to the cancellation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled address in the House. Repeated disruptions soon after proceedings began made it impossible for the Speaker to continue the session, forcing an early adjournment.
According to parliamentary sources, the Prime Minister was expected to speak on key legislative and policy matters during the sitting. However, Opposition MPs raised slogans and entered the Well of the House, pressing their demands and refusing to return to their seats despite appeals from the Chair.
The Speaker urged members to maintain decorum and allow the House to function, stressing the importance of discussion and debate in a democracy. These appeals, however, went unheeded, with protests intensifying and bringing all business to a halt.
Treasury bench members criticised the disruptions, accusing the Opposition of deliberately stalling parliamentary work and denying the Prime Minister an opportunity to address the House. Opposition leaders, on the other hand, maintained that their protests were justified, citing unresolved issues they wanted the government to respond to.
With no consensus in sight, the Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day. It remains unclear whether the Prime Minister’s address will be rescheduled later in the session, as continued disruptions have already affected several sittings of Parliament.
