Dialogue Over Discord: Kuki-Zo Legislator Defends Decision to Join Manipur Government

Source The Indian Express

IMPHAL — Breaking away from the prevailing narrative of absolute separation, a prominent Kuki-Zo Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) has publicly defended his decision to participate in the Manipur government, asserting that a lasting resolution to the state’s ethnic crisis can only be achieved through political negotiation rather than armed conflict.

In a candid address that has sparked intense debate across the hills and the valley, the legislator emphasized that while the grievances of his community remain deep and unresolved, the path to justice requires a seat at the administrative table.

“Guns Are Not the Answer”

The MLA’s statement comes at a time of heightened tension, as Manipur continues to grapple with the aftermath of ethnic violence that began in May 2023. Addressing his constituents and the broader public, he noted that while the “language of the gun” has dominated the landscape for months, it offers no sustainable future.

“We have seen enough bloodshed and displacement,” the MLA stated. “History teaches us that every Great War ends with a signature on a piece of paper. If the solution has to be found at the table eventually, why must we lose more lives before we get there? I joined the government because my people need a voice where decisions are made, not just where bullets are fired.”

Bridging the Administrative Gap

Since the conflict erupted, many Kuki-Zo representatives have maintained a distance from the Imphal-based government, citing security concerns and a complete breakdown of trust. By choosing to engage, this legislator argues he is acting as a necessary conduit for humanitarian aid, rehabilitation, and policy advocacy.

His decision focuses on three core pillars:

Direct Advocacy: Ensuring that the specific needs of hill districts are not ignored in the state budget.

Restoring Communication: Serving as a link between the community leadership and the state executive to prevent further misunderstandings.

A Political Roadmap: Pushing for a constitutional settlement that ensures the security and autonomy of the Kuki-Zo people through democratic channels.

Mixed Reactions in the Hills

The move has met with a complex reception. While some see it as a pragmatic step toward normalcy, others—particularly civil society organizations—remain skeptical, questioning if the current administration is willing to offer genuine concessions.

Despite the criticism, the MLA remains firm. “Being in the room doesn’t mean we have forgotten our struggle; it means we are fighting it with logic, law, and persistence,” he concluded.
