PESHAWAR – In a significant breakthrough for counter-terrorism efforts, law enforcement agencies in Peshawar have arrested three individuals allegedly linked to the devastating suicide attack on a Shia mosque in Islamabad.
The arrests follow an intensive intelligence-led operation across the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Authorities believe the suspects played a pivotal role in the logistics and planning of the blast that claimed numerous lives and left dozens more injured during Friday prayers.
Details of the Operation
According to a senior police official who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the suspects were traced through a combination of CCTV footage analysis and forensic data recovered from the blast site.
Logistical Support: Investigators allege the trio provided the suicide bomber with a safe house and transport.
Facilitation: There are indications that the suspects acted as “handlers,” coordinating the timing and target of the attack with a larger militant network.
Recovered Evidence: During the raids, police reportedly seized explosive materials, extremist literature, and several mobile devices currently undergoing digital forensic examination.
Heightened Security Measures
Following the arrests, security has been placed on high alert across major urban centers, including Islamabad and Peshawar. Interior Ministry officials have reinforced security protocols at religious sites, particularly during congregate prayers, to prevent further sectarian violence.
“This operation is a testament to our commitment to uprooting the networks of terror that seek to divide our society. We will not rest until every link in this chain of violence is broken,” a government spokesperson stated during a press briefing.
The Investigation Continues
While the arrests mark a major milestone, the investigation remains ongoing to identify the masterminds behind the attack. Initial reports suggest the involvement of a banned militant outfit known for targeting religious minorities in the region.
The three suspects are currently being held at an undisclosed location for further interrogation before being presented in an anti-terrorism court.
