Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has filed a defamation suit worth ₹500 crore against Congress Member of Parliament Gaurav Gogoi, accusing him of making false and malicious allegations that have harmed his personal reputation and political standing.
According to sources, the civil defamation case has been filed in a court in Assam, where Sarma has alleged that Gogoi’s public statements were baseless, defamatory, and intended to mislead the public. The Chief Minister has claimed that the remarks were made with political motives and caused serious damage to his image as well as that of the state government.
The legal notice reportedly states that the allegations lacked evidence and were widely circulated through media platforms, amplifying their impact. Sarma has sought ₹500 crore as compensation for reputational damage and has also demanded an unconditional public apology from the Congress leader.
Reacting to the development, political circles in Assam said the move signals an escalation in the ongoing war of words between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress in the state. Gaurav Gogoi, a prominent Congress MP from Assam, has been vocal in his criticism of the Sarma-led government on several issues in recent months.
While the Congress has not yet issued a detailed response to the lawsuit, party leaders have maintained that Gogoi’s statements were based on public interest concerns. Legal experts note that the case could set the stage for a prolonged legal and political battle ahead of key electoral contests.
The court is expected to take up the matter in the coming days, as both sides prepare to contest the high-stakes defamation claim.
