NEW DELHI — In a major move aimed at de-escalating tensions in the high-altitude region of Ladakh, the Union Government on Saturday, March 14, 2026, revoked the detention of climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act (NSA).
Wangchuk, who had been held in Jodhpur Central Jail for nearly six months, was released with immediate effect following an official order from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
The Path to Release
The decision comes just days before a scheduled hearing in the Supreme Court, where a habeas corpus petition filed by Wangchuk’s wife, Dr. Gitanjali Angmo, was being considered. The court had recently expressed skepticism regarding the grounds of the detention, suggesting that authorities might have “read too much” into Wangchuk’s speeches.
In its official statement, the MHA noted:
“The Government remains committed to fostering an environment of peace, stability, and mutual trust in Ladakh so as to facilitate constructive and meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders.”
The ministry further clarified that Wangchuk had already served nearly half of the maximum one-year detention period permitted under the NSA.
Context of the Detention
Wangchuk was detained on September 26, 2025, following a period of intense civil unrest in Leh. The protests were centered on demands for Sixth Schedule status and statehood for Ladakh to protect its fragile ecology and tribal identity.
The government had initially labeled Wangchuk a “chief provocateur” after a protest on September 24 turned violent, resulting in four deaths. However, supporters and legal counsel argued that the activist had publicly condemned the violence and was using peaceful means, including hunger strikes, to advocate for regional safeguards.
