The Election Commission of India has raised concerns over the Mamata Banerjee-led All India Trinamool Congress government’s recent move to increase Dearness Allowance (DA) for state government employees ahead of upcoming elections.
According to officials, the poll panel sought clarification from the Government of West Bengal regarding the timing of the announcement, noting that decisions involving financial benefits to government employees close to elections could potentially influence voters. The Commission said such measures are closely examined to ensure compliance with the Model Code of Conduct, which aims to maintain fairness during the electoral process.
The DA hike announcement had sparked political debate, with opposition parties alleging that the decision was aimed at gaining electoral advantage. They argued that policy decisions involving public funds should be carefully evaluated during the election period.
However, the state government defended the move, stating that the decision was part of an ongoing process to address the long-standing demands of government employees and was not linked to electoral considerations.
Sources indicated that the Election Commission is reviewing the explanation provided by the state authorities. The poll body will decide whether the announcement violates any provisions of the Model Code of Conduct or if further action is required.
The issue has added another layer to the political atmosphere in the state as parties intensify their campaigns ahead of the elections. The Election Commission reiterated that it remains committed to ensuring a level playing field for all political parties during the electoral process.
