CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA — Apple has officially pulled the curtain back on the AirPods Max 2, the long-awaited successor to its premium over-ear headphones. Arriving more than five years after the original debut, the second-generation model maintains the iconic silhouette of its predecessor while introducing a powerhouse of internal upgrades designed to reclaim its spot at the top of the luxury audio market.
Priced at $549, the AirPods Max 2 will be available for pre-order starting Wednesday, March 25, with official shipping and retail availability beginning in early April 2026.
The Power of the H2 Chip
The defining upgrade of the AirPods Max 2 is the transition from the aging H1 chip to the state-of-the-art H2 chip. This silicon upgrade unlocks a suite of intelligent features previously reserved for the AirPods Pro line:
1.5x More Effective ANC: Apple claims the new model offers significantly stronger Active Noise Cancellation, better at neutralizing harsh environmental sounds like airplane engines or city traffic.
Adaptive Audio: The headphones now automatically blend Transparency mode and ANC to tailor the noise control experience as your environment changes throughout the day.
Conversation Awareness: The AirPods Max 2 can now sense when you start speaking, automatically lowering your media volume and enhancing the voices of people in front of you.
Pro-Grade Audio and New Capabilities
Beyond noise cancellation, Apple is targeting audiophiles and creators with several high-fidelity additions:
USB-C Lossless Audio: For the first time, users can enjoy 24-bit/48kHz lossless audio via a wired connection using the included USB-C cable.
Live Translation: Leveraging Apple Intelligence, the headphones support real-time, in-person translation, allowing users to communicate across languages directly through their headset.
Siri Head Gestures: Users can now interact with Siri silently by nodding “yes” or shaking their head “no” to respond to calls or notifications.
Camera Remote: A new functionality allows users to press the Digital Crown to trigger a photo or start a video recording on a paired iPhone or iPad.
Aesthetic and Availability
While the physical design remains largely unchanged—retaining the breathable knit mesh headband and stainless steel frame—Apple has refreshed the palette. The AirPods Max 2 will launch in five new finishes: Midnight, Starlight, Blue, Purple, and Orange.
Despite the internal overhaul, Apple has managed to keep the battery life steady at 20 hours with ANC enabled. The headphones come bundled with a color-matched Smart Case and a USB-C charging cable.
