GATE 2026 Results Declared: Top PSUs Open Doors for Engineering Talent

Source The Indian Express

GUWAHATI – The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati officially released the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026 results today, March 19, 2026. As the scores go live on the official GOAPS portal, thousands of engineering graduates are now shifting their focus toward India’s premier Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).

For many, a high GATE score is not just a ticket to an M.Tech at an IIT, but a direct gateway to a prestigious career in a “Maharatna” or “Navratna” company. Following the result announcement, several top-tier PSUs are expected to begin their shortlisting process immediately.

Major PSUs Recruiting via GATE 2026

Several government-owned corporations use the GATE scorecard as the primary filter for hiring Trainee Engineers and Officers. Below is a list of prominent PSUs that traditionally recruit based on these scores:

Sector Leading PSUs

Energy & Power NTPC, NHPC, Power Grid (PGCIL), NPCIL, DVC

Oil & Gas ONGC, IOCL, GAIL, HPCL, BPCL, OIL

Mining & Metals Coal India (CIL), SAIL, NALCO, NMDC

Engineering & Mfg. BHEL, BEL, HAL, Mazagon Dock (MDL)

Infrastructure NHAI, Engineers India Limited (EIL), AAI

Expected Cutoff Trends for PSU Hiring

Securing a job in a top-tier PSU like ONGC or IOCL typically requires a high percentile. While cutoffs vary by branch and category, experts suggest the following benchmarks for the General category:

Top-Tier PSUs (ONGC, IOCL, NTPC): Candidates generally need a GATE score of 800–850+.

Mid-Tier PSUs (GAIL, SAIL, NLC): A score range of 750–800 often leads to interview calls.

State PSUs & Regional Units: Scores between 650–750 may be competitive for specialized roles or reserved categories.

Note: Recruitment usually involves a two-stage process: shortlisting based on the GATE Score (85-90% weightage) followed by a Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI).

Next Steps for Aspirants

With the results out, candidates should keep their digital scorecards ready. Unlike the old system, most PSUs now require candidates to apply individually on their respective official websites using their GATE 2026 registration number.

Notifications from NTPC, PGCIL, and IOCL are expected to be the first to roll out in the coming weeks. Candidates are advised to monitor the “Careers” section of these organizations frequently to avoid missing application deadlines.
