Sydney, March 20, 2026:
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke were confronted by protesters during an Eid prayer gathering at Lakemba Mosque in western Sydney, where sections of the crowd shouted slogans and demanded that the leaders leave the venue.
The disruption occurred during a large congregation marking the end of Ramadan, attended by thousands of worshippers. A group of attendees voiced anger over the Australian government’s stance on the ongoing Middle East conflict, particularly its perceived support for Israel. Chants such as “get them out of here” and accusations of backing violence were heard during the event.
Security personnel intervened as tensions briefly escalated, with at least one protester being removed from the premises. Despite the incident, the event continued after a short disruption.
Prime Minister Albanese later downplayed the situation, stating that the majority of attendees were respectful and that only a small number of individuals were responsible for the disturbance.
The mosque visit had been organized as an effort to foster dialogue between political leaders and the Muslim community. However, the protests highlighted growing frustration among some community members regarding foreign policy decisions and domestic concerns, including rising tensions linked to global conflicts.
The incident underscores the broader political sensitivity surrounding international issues and their impact on domestic communities in Australia, especially amid ongoing debates over the government’s approach to the Israel-Gaza conflict.
