LAHORE — Karachi Kings captain David Warner briefly lost his cool during the official Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026 pre-tournament press conference on Wednesday, calling out fellow skippers for what he deemed “unprofessional” behavior.
The veteran Australian opener was in the middle of answering a reporter’s question regarding his team’s strategies when he noticed several other captains—including Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mohammad Rizwan, and Marnus Labuschagne—engaged in a private conversation and laughing among themselves.
The Outburst
Warner, known for his competitive fire, abruptly stopped his sentence and stared toward his peers. The room fell silent as he addressed the distraction directly.
“What’s wrong, gentlemen? Sorry, we’ve got some school kids in here,” Warner quipped, his tone a mix of irritation and sharp wit.
The remark immediately sent a ripple through the media hall. While some in the audience laughed at the “schooling,” the fellow captains appeared momentarily taken aback before returning their attention to the proceedings.
A Tense Build-up to PSL 2026
The incident adds another layer of drama to a tournament already under significant pressure. The 2026 edition of the PSL is set to begin on March 26, but the lead-up has been marred by logistical and security challenges:
Behind Closed Doors: Due to a severe fuel crisis driven by ongoing conflicts in West Asia, the PCB has restricted the tournament to just two venues—Karachi and Lahore.
No Fans: To minimize travel and resource consumption, matches will be played without spectators.
Security Concerns: Recent reports have highlighted safety warnings issued to international stars like Warner and Steve Smith, though the PCB has reiterated its commitment to “state-of-the-art” security for all players.
Looking Ahead
Despite the friction at the podium, Warner later shifted the focus back to cricket, expressing confidence in the Karachi Kings’ roster, which now includes the likes of Adam Zampa and Salman Ali Agha.
The tournament kicks off tomorrow at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, where the Lahore Qalandars face off against the Hyderabad Kingsmen. Whether Warner’s “schooling” of his rivals translates to dominance on the pitch remains to be seen.
