Silent Crisis: Care Health Insurance Highlights Rising Liver Disease in India

NEW DELHI — As the world observes World Liver Day, Care Health Insurance has issued a stark warning regarding the deteriorating state of liver health across India. With lifestyle-related ailments on the rise, the insurer is urging citizens to move beyond reactive care and embrace proactive lifestyle changes to combat what experts call a “silent epidemic.”

The Burden of Disease

India currently accounts for nearly one-fifth of the world’s liver-related deaths. According to data shared by Care Health Insurance, the country is witnessing a significant shift in the demographics of liver disease. Once primarily associated with chronic alcohol consumption, Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is now becoming a dominant threat, fueled by:

Sedentary Lifestyles: Lack of physical activity among urban populations.

Dietary Habits: High intake of processed sugars, saturated fats, and “junk” food.

Metabolic Comorbidities: Rising rates of obesity and Type-2 diabetes.

The Financial Strain

Beyond the physical toll, the financial burden of treating advanced liver conditions is immense. Care Health Insurance noted that the cost of a liver transplant in India can range from ₹20 lakh to ₹35 lakh, excluding long-term post-operative medication and care.

“We are seeing a worrying trend where liver-related claims are not just increasing in frequency, but are also appearing in younger age groups,” a spokesperson for Care Health Insurance stated. “Early detection remains the only way to avoid catastrophic health and financial outcomes.”

Key Recommendations for Prevention

In alignment with this year’s World Liver Day theme, health experts and insurers are advocating for a four-pillar approach to liver maintenance:

Pillar Action Step

Nutrition Increase fiber intake; replace refined carbs with whole grains.

Activity At least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise per week.

Screening Regular Liver Function Tests (LFT) for those over 35 or with high BMI.

Avoidance Strict limitation of alcohol and processed sugars.

Looking Ahead

Care Health Insurance is using this platform to emphasize the importance of comprehensive health covers that include annual health check-ups. By identifying fatty liver at Stage 1, individuals can often reverse the damage through diet and exercise alone, preventing the progression to cirrhosis or liver cancer.

As India continues to grapple with these rising statistics, the message from the healthcare sector is clear: Your liver is a resilient organ, but it isn’t invincible. Early awareness today is the best insurance for tomorrow.
