KOLKATA — In a political shift that has redrawn the map of Eastern India, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially named Suvendu Adhikari as the next Chief Minister of West Bengal. The announcement follows a landslide victory in the 2026 Assembly elections, where the saffron party secured a commanding 207 seats, ending 15 years of Trinamool Congress (TMC) rule.
The Rise of the ‘Bhumiputra’
Union Home Minister Amit Shah formally announced Adhikari’s name on Friday evening following a high-stakes meeting of the BJP legislative party in Kolkata. According to party sources, Adhikari was the unanimous choice among the newly elected MLAs.
“I announce the name of Suvendu Adhikari, elected as the Leader of the West Bengal BJP Legislative Party,” Shah stated, marking the culmination of a decade-long effort by the BJP to capture the Bengal administration.
Adhikari, often called the “Giantkiller” of Bengal politics, cemented his claim to the top post by defeating incumbent Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in her traditional stronghold of Bhabanipur by a margin of over 15,000 votes. This follows his high-profile victory against her in Nandigram during the 2021 cycle.
A Mandate for Change
The election results, declared earlier this week, saw the TMC’s tally shrink to just 80 seats. Analysts attribute the BJP’s massive breakthrough to:
Consolidation of Hindu Votes: A significant shift in rural and semi-urban belts.
Minority Vote Fragmentation: A split in traditional TMC vote banks among multiple opposition parties.
Anti-Incumbency: Rising public sentiment regarding local governance and security issues.
The Road Ahead
Following the announcement, celebrations erupted in East and West Midnapore—Adhikari’s home turf. Supporters filled the streets chanting slogans and spraying gulal, hailing the elevation of a “Bhumiputra” (son of the soil) to the state’s highest office.
In his first address as the CM-designate, Adhikari emphasized a “double-engine” growth model.
“Let the Centre and State work together to fulfill the aspirations of the people of Bengal,” he told reporters at Lok Bhavan.
Swearing-In Ceremony
The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, May 9, 2026, at the iconic Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with several Union Ministers and Chief Ministers from BJP-ruled states, is expected to attend the historic event.
With this transition, West Bengal becomes the latest state to be governed by the BJP, marking a significant milestone in the party’s “Mission East” strategy.
