BENGALURU — Moments after stepping down as Karnataka Chief Minister, veteran Congress leader Siddaramaiah announced that he has politely declined an offer from the party high command to transition to national politics via a Rajya Sabha seat.
Addressing a packed press conference at his residential office, “Krishna,” the 78-year-old leader made it clear that while he is relinquishing the top executive post, his political career in the state is far from over.
“The high command asked me to go to the Rajya Sabha. I declined it humbly. I have no interest in national politics. I will remain in state politics,” Siddaramaiah told reporters.
Grounded in Karnataka
Speculation had been rife that the Congress central leadership would accommodate the outgoing Chief Minister in Delhi to ensure a smooth transition of power in Bengaluru. However, Siddaramaiah’s refusal to relocate to the national capital alters that narrative.
He emphasized his commitment to serving out the remainder of his term as an elected representative.
Active MLA Status: Siddaramaiah confirmed he will remain an active public figure and serve his remaining two years as the MLA for the Varuna constituency.
Ideological Battle: He stated he would continue fighting for social justice and actively counter communal forces within the state “until his last breath.”
A Ordered, Voluntary Exit
Siddaramaiah clarified that his decision to step down as Chief Minister followed a direct request from the Congress top brass two days ago. He dismissed any rumors of internal pressure, stating that he had always maintained he would resign the moment the high command asked him to.
The veteran leader submitted his formal resignation letter to the Governor’s office at Lok Bhavan. Because Governor Thawarchand Gehlot was traveling outside the state, the letter was received by the Special Secretary.
Government Enjoys “Absolute Majority”
Flanked by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar—who is widely anticipated to succeed him—Siddaramaiah projected a united front and assured the public that the government remains rock-solid.

“Our party has a comfortable majority. The leadership change will not impact the stability of the ruling administration,” Siddaramaiah asserted.

Reflecting on his journey as an “accidental politician” with no family background in public service, he thanked the party for allowing him the rare privilege of serving as Karnataka’s Chief Minister twice.
