Hormuz Tensions Cast Shadow on India’s Economic Stability, Warns Finance Ministry

Source The economics Times

India’s economic outlook faces a significant external threat from potential disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, the Ministry of Finance has cautioned, highlighting risks to both growth and inflation in the coming months.

In its latest assessment, the ministry noted that any escalation affecting the critical maritime chokepoint could severely impact global oil supplies. Given that India imports a substantial portion of its crude oil through this route, even temporary disruptions could lead to sharp increases in energy prices.

Rising crude prices would likely translate into higher transportation and manufacturing costs domestically, fueling inflationary pressures across sectors. This, in turn, could weaken consumer demand and slow down overall economic growth.

The ministry emphasized that while India’s macroeconomic fundamentals remain resilient, the global environment continues to be uncertain. Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly around key oil transit routes, are being closely monitored.

To mitigate potential shocks, policymakers are focusing on maintaining adequate strategic petroleum reserves and diversifying energy import sources. Additionally, efforts to accelerate the transition toward renewable energy are being seen as a long-term buffer against such external vulnerabilities.

Economists suggest that a sustained disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could also impact the Indian rupee, widen the current account deficit, and complicate monetary policy decisions for the Reserve Bank of India.

Despite these concerns, the government remains cautiously optimistic, reiterating its commitment to fiscal discipline and structural reforms aimed at sustaining growth momentum.

The ministry concluded that while the risks are real, proactive policy measures and global coordination could help cushion the impact on India’s economy.
