NEW DELHI — In a stunning development for Indian cricket, World Cup-winning T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav is on the verge of being stripped of his leadership duties. Despite leading Team India to an emotional global triumph just a few months ago, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee is moving forward with a complete overhaul of the shortest format, putting middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer in the driver’s seat for the captaincy.
The decision is expected to be formalized and communicated before the squad for India’s upcoming UK tour—featuring matches against Ireland and England starting June 26—is finalized.
The Unforgiving Nature of Form
While Suryakumar’s tactical acumen helped secure India’s third ICC T20 World Cup title earlier this year, his plummeting personal form and a lean patch spanning nearly 18 months have forced the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee to make a ruthless call.
Sources indicate that the selectors were waiting to see if the dynamic batter could turn things around during the recently concluded IPL 2026 season. However, Suryakumar endured a miserable campaign with the Mumbai Indians, managing meager returns as his side languished at the bottom half of the table.
“Surya is set to be removed from captaincy. The selectors wanted to wait until the end of the IPL to see whether he could get back into form. Since he looked completely out of sync and not just out of runs, a tough call needs to be taken,” a BCCI source revealed.
Worse still for the veteran batter, reports suggest that if he loses the captaincy, he may find himself dropped from the T20I playing XI entirely as India builds toward the future.
