Islamabad: Hopes for a major diplomatic breakthrough in the Middle East have surged after Shehbaz Sharif announced that a peace agreement between the United States and Iran could be finalised within the next 24 hours.
According to Sharif, who has played a mediating role in the negotiations, both sides have agreed on the framework and the final text of the deal. He indicated that preparations are underway for an electronic signing of the agreement, which could take place immediately after its formal conclusion.
“We are closer to a peace deal than ever before,” Sharif said, adding that technical-level discussions are expected to follow in the coming week to implement the agreement.
The potential deal comes after months of intense conflict in the region, which has disrupted global energy markets and heightened geopolitical tensions. The negotiations, facilitated in part by Pakistan, aim to establish a ceasefire and lay the groundwork for longer-term stability.
However, despite Pakistan’s optimism, officials in Tehran have expressed caution. Iranian authorities have indicated that while progress has been made, a final signing within such a short timeframe may not be guaranteed.
Key elements of the proposed agreement are believed to include easing economic sanctions on Iran, addressing concerns over its nuclear programme, and reopening critical shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz. The United States, under President Donald Trump, has maintained that any agreement must ensure strict limitations on Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Meanwhile, Iran has sought economic relief and security guarantees as part of the negotiations.
