New Delhi, June 28: Renowned environmentalist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk on Sunday began an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in the national capital, drawing attention to pressing ecological and governance concerns in the Himalayan region. The protest quickly gained momentum as six students joined him in solidarity, amplifying the call for urgent policy intervention.
Wangchuk, widely known for his innovative work in sustainable development and education in Ladakh, stated that the hunger strike was a “peaceful appeal” to the government to address environmental vulnerabilities and ensure constitutional safeguards for the region. Sitting under the scorching Delhi heat, he emphasized that the fragile Himalayan ecosystem is facing unprecedented threats due to unregulated development and climate change.
