India has solidified its position as a global hub for Global Capability Centres (GCCs), now hosting nearly half of all such centres worldwide, according to Chief Economic Adviser V. Anantha Nageswaran. The transformation marks a significant shift in the country’s role—from being primarily a back-office destination to becoming a strategic powerhouse for innovation, research, and advanced technologies.

Speaking at a recent industry event, Nageswaran highlighted how GCCs in India have evolved beyond traditional functions such as customer support and data processing. Today, they are playing a critical role in driving artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, product development, and digital transformation initiatives for global corporations.

India’s strong talent pool, cost competitiveness, and rapidly improving digital infrastructure have been key drivers behind this growth. The country produces a large number of engineers and technology professionals every year, making it an attractive destination for multinational companies seeking skilled manpower for complex and high-value tasks.

According to industry estimates, there are over 1,500 GCCs operating in India, employing millions of professionals across cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, and Gurugram. These centres are increasingly becoming innovation hubs, contributing significantly to global research and development efforts.

Nageswaran emphasized that the rise of GCCs reflects growing investor confidence in India’s economic stability and policy framework. He noted that consistent reforms, ease of doing business, and government initiatives aimed at boosting the digital economy have played a crucial role in attracting global firms.

Another key factor behind the expansion of GCCs is the increasing adoption of emerging technologies. Many multinational corporations are leveraging their India-based centres to develop AI-driven solutions, cybersecurity frameworks, and cloud-based platforms. This shift is positioning India at the forefront of the global tech ecosystem.

The Chief Economic Adviser also pointed out that the GCC boom is generating high-quality employment opportunities and contributing to the country’s GDP growth. As companies continue to expand their operations, the demand for skilled professionals in areas like data science, analytics, and software engineering is expected to rise further.

However, he cautioned that sustaining this growth will require continuous investment in education, upskilling, and infrastructure. Ensuring a steady supply of talent and maintaining global competitiveness will be crucial for India to retain its leadership position in the GCC space.

Industry experts believe that India’s GCC landscape will continue to expand in the coming years, with more companies setting up advanced capability centres. As the country transitions from a service provider to a strategic innovation partner, its role in shaping the future of global business is becoming increasingly prominent.

The evolution of GCCs in India signals not just economic progress but also a broader transformation in how the country is perceived on the global stage—from a cost-effective outsourcing destination to a key driver of innovation and technological advancement.
