A Delhi court has sentenced former Aam Aadmi Party councillor Tahir Hussain and several others to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of Intelligence Bureau (IB) staffer Ankit Sharma during the 2020 Delhi Riots 2020. The verdict marks a significant development in one of the most high-profile cases linked to the communal violence that shook the national capital.
Delivering the judgment, the court held that the prosecution had successfully established the involvement of Hussain and his associates in the killing. The judge observed that the crime was heinous in nature and warranted strict punishment, noting that Sharma was targeted during a period of intense unrest and violence.
Ankit Sharma, a young IB officer, was found dead in a drain in northeast Delhi’s Chand Bagh area during the riots in February 2020. His post-mortem report revealed multiple stab wounds, pointing to a violent and gruesome killing. The incident had sparked widespread outrage and intensified demands for justice.
According to the prosecution, Tahir Hussain played a key role in orchestrating the violence in the area. Witness testimonies, call detail records, and other forensic evidence were presented to establish his presence and involvement at the crime scene. The court noted that the attack was not spontaneous but part of a larger conspiracy amid the riots.
The defense, however, had argued that Hussain was being falsely implicated and was himself a victim of the violence. Despite these claims, the court found the evidence against him compelling and sufficient for conviction.
The sentencing has been welcomed by Sharma’s family, who have been seeking justice for over four years. Speaking after the verdict, family members expressed relief and said the judgment restores their faith in the judicial system.
The 2020 Delhi riots, which erupted over tensions surrounding the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), left more than 50 people dead and hundreds injured. The violence remains a sensitive and politically charged issue, with several cases still under trial.
Legal experts say the conviction in this case could have wider implications for other riot-related prosecutions, reinforcing accountability in cases of mob violence. Meanwhile, the convicted individuals have the option to appeal the verdict in a higher court.
