An Air India flight traveling from Phuket to Delhi encountered severe turbulence mid-air, leaving at least 17 passengers injured and causing panic among those onboard, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
According to airline sources, the incident occurred when the aircraft was cruising at a high altitude and suddenly passed through a patch of intense turbulence. Passengers who were not wearing seatbelts at the time were reportedly thrown off their seats, leading to injuries ranging from minor bruises to more serious impacts.
Cabin crew members quickly responded to the situation, administering first aid and ensuring that injured passengers were stabilized. The pilot also made an announcement urging all passengers to fasten their seatbelts immediately as the aircraft navigated through the rough weather conditions.
The flight landed safely at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, where medical teams were already on standby. The injured passengers were promptly taken for further medical evaluation, with a few requiring hospital treatment.
Air India issued a statement expressing concern for the injured passengers and assured that all necessary assistance was being provided. The airline also emphasized the importance of adhering to safety instructions, particularly the use of seatbelts during flights.
Aviation experts noted that turbulence-related incidents, while relatively rare, can occur without warning and are often linked to sudden weather changes or jet streams. They reiterated that wearing seatbelts at all times while seated is one of the most effective ways to prevent injuries during such events.
Authorities have not reported any structural damage to the aircraft, and a routine inspection is expected to be carried out as a precautionary measure.
The incident has once again highlighted the unpredictable nature of air travel and the critical importance of in-flight safety compliance.
