China Orders Mass Evacuation as Powerful Storm Threatens Coastal Regions

Source BBC

Beijing: Chinese authorities have evacuated nearly one million residents from vulnerable areas as a massive storm approaches the country’s eastern and southern coastlines, raising concerns over widespread flooding, landslides, and infrastructure damage.

The large-scale evacuation was initiated after meteorological agencies issued high-level warnings, forecasting intense rainfall, strong winds, and dangerous storm surges. Local governments in several provinces, including Fujian, Zhejiang, and Guangdong, moved swiftly to relocate residents from low-lying and flood-prone regions to safer shelters.

Emergency response teams have been deployed across affected areas, while schools, public transport, and businesses have been temporarily shut down to ensure public safety. Authorities have also suspended fishing operations and urged ships to return to port, as the storm is expected to bring hazardous sea conditions.

According to weather officials, the storm could dump record levels of rainfall in a short period, increasing the risk of flash floods and urban waterlogging. Rescue teams, medical units, and disaster relief supplies have been pre-positioned to respond quickly to emergencies.

China has significantly improved its disaster preparedness systems in recent years, particularly after experiencing severe flooding events in the past. However, officials remain cautious, warning residents to strictly follow safety advisories and avoid unnecessary travel.

State media reported that thousands of shelters have been set up with food, water, and essential supplies to accommodate evacuees. Authorities are also using digital alert systems and social media platforms to keep the public informed in real time.

As the storm continues to advance, experts emphasize that the coming days will be critical. The government has urged citizens to stay indoors, remain alert, and cooperate with evacuation and safety measures to minimize potential casualties and damage.
