NEW DELHI — India is actively assessing the national security and regional stability implications of the newly minted trilateral defence pact signed between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Türkiye, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Tuesday.
Responding to queries during a regular media briefing, MEA official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that New Delhi is closely tracking shifts in the West Asian geopolitical landscape and remains prepared to safeguard its strategic interests.
“As far as this particular agreement is concerned, we are examining its implications, both from the perspective of our national security, as well as considerations of regional peace and stability,” Jaiswal stated. “India remains fully committed to safeguarding its national interests and will take all necessary measures in this regard.”
The Makkah Joint Defence Agreement
The agreement, known as the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, was signed on August 7 following a summit in Mecca involving Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Collective Deterrence Clause: The pact contains a mutual defence provision stipulating that an armed attack against any one of the three signatory nations will be treated as an act of aggression against all three.
Expanded Cooperation: The framework outlines joint defence production, intelligence sharing, counter-terrorism initiatives, and joint military training.
Bilateral Precursor: The accord expands upon an earlier bilateral mutual defence arrangement established between Islamabad and Riyadh.
Strategic Balancing in South and West Asia
While signatory governments described the arrangement as a defensive framework under Article 51 of the UN Charter rather than a bloc aimed at any single nation, the development has drawn scrutiny across regional capitals.
For New Delhi, the deepening military integration between Islamabad, Ankara, and Riyadh intersects with existing security concerns in South Asia as well as vital Indian maritime and economic interests across the Gulf. Officials reiterated that India will calibrate its security readiness and diplomatic posture as the ramifications of the alliance become clearer.
