NEW DELHI — The political confrontation in Parliament escalated on Wednesday as Union Home Minister Amit Shah offered to hold an unprecedented 24-hour debate to address all Opposition queries, a proposal promptly dismissed by Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, who asserted that the country is demanding accountability rather than “lectures.”
Shah’s Offer for an Extended Session
Responding to persistent Opposition protests and slogans questioning his presence in the House, Amit Shah stated that the government has “nothing to hide” and is fully prepared for an exhaustive discussion on key issues, including recent protests by students.
“Let the public decide who is running away. Let them submit a letter to the Speaker by 3:00 PM today. We are ready for a discussion on all aspects from 3:00 PM today until 3:00 PM tomorrow. I will sit in the House myself, take notes on everything, and respond to every point so that the truth is fully revealed,” Shah said while speaking outside Parliament.
The Home Minister pushed back against Opposition rhetoric labeling him “missing,” explaining that he has been present in his parliamentary chamber regularly throughout the session, but disruptions on the floor have stalled formal proceedings. He emphasized that substantive matters require comprehensive parliamentary debate rather than brief, uncoordinated statements.
Opposition Rejection and Demands for Accountability
Shortly after Shah’s statement, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi rejected the proposed marathon session. Speaking to reporters, Gandhi stated that the youth and the Opposition are seeking direct answers on alleged police action against student demonstrations rather than lengthy speeches from the Treasury benches.
“The Opposition has clearly said that we are not interested in Amit Shah giving us a lecture. We seek answers,” Gandhi said. He further questioned the chain of command during the recent police action against students, arguing that the Home Minister must take direct responsibility for law enforcement measures.
Gandhi also shared his remarks on social media, asserting that the Opposition will continue to demand clear accountability inside the House rather than agreeing to terms set unilaterally by the government.
Ongoing Stalemate
Despite Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and the government expressing readiness for structured discussions, the impasse between the Treasury benches and the Opposition remains unresolved. Both sides continue to trade accusations over who is responsible for the repeated disruptions and adjournments during the ongoing session.
