MUMBAI — In a major corporate development for India’s largest conglomerate, the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT) has officially initiated the process to select the next chairman of Tata Sons. The decision comes following an official announcement from incumbent Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran stating he will not seek reappointment when his current tenure expires on February 20, 2027.
Formal Succession Process Initiated
In an official statement issued on Thursday, Tata Trusts—which owns approximately 66% of Tata Sons—confirmed that its trustees passed a resolution to constitute a selection committee under the holding company’s Articles of Association.
“We thank him for his immense contribution during a period of significant change, growth and transformation across the Group… We extend our full support to Tata Sons in ensuring a smooth, timely and orderly transition of leadership, consistent with the values and long-term interests of Tata Sons and the Tata group.”

The search panel, expected to be formed shortly, will evaluate both internal leaders and industry veterans to recommend a candidate for the top post.
Background Behind Chandrasekaran’s Decision
Chandrasekaran, who took charge as Tata Sons Chairman in January 2017 after heading Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), opted against seeking an extension following prolonged deliberation over board consensus.
In a letter to board members, Chandrasekaran noted that while major constituent trusts had previously backed a five-year extension, the lack of unanimous board consensus led him to defer the decision and ultimately step aside to give the group operational clarity. During his nearly decade-long stewardship, Tata Group’s combined revenues expanded dramatically to over ₹13.3 lakh crore in FY26, alongside major strategic pivots into aviation, semiconductors, and digital platforms.
Frontrunners for the Top Job
Industry observers point to a few prominent internal group executives who could be considered by the upcoming selection committee:
T. V. Narendran: CEO & Managing Director of Tata Steel, recognized for his long tenure and close working relationship across group entities.
Saurabh Agrawal: Group Chief Financial Officer of Tata Sons, key architect of major capital allocations and deals.
Shailesh Chandra: Managing Director & CEO of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Electric Vehicles.
K. Krithivasan: Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director of TCS.
The search committee will have roughly six months to finalize a candidate and ensure a seamless governance handover ahead of the February 2027 transition deadline.
