Washington Issues Global Ultimatum Over Tehran: Back Total Economic Siege or Face Severe Fallout

Source The Hindu

WASHINGTON — The United States has delivered a stark ultimatum to international allies and rival powers alike, demanding full compliance with an aggressive economic campaign aimed at crippling the Iranian government and cutting off its remaining channels to world commerce.

Senior American officials described the escalating strategy as the most extensive coordinated economic offensive ever mounted against a single state. Addressing global partners directly, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned on CNBC that nations must choose between siding with Washington or facing secondary punitive measures for sustaining trade links with Tehran.

“This is going to be the greatest coordinated economic isolation in the history of the world,” Bessent stated, adding that the goal is to dismantle the economic foundation enabling the Iranian government to project regional influence. He noted that maximum economic leverage reduces the immediate necessity for large-scale military escalation, though military alternatives remain on standby.

The diplomatic pressure particularly focuses on China, which remains the primary importer of Iranian crude oil despite existing maritime restrictions and sanctions targeting illicit shipping networks. While Washington noted that bilateral discussions with Beijing are largely proceeding behind closed doors ahead of upcoming diplomatic summits, Beijing has publicly rejected the unilateral sanctions strategy.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told reporters in Beijing that unilateral pressure and trade penalties fail to resolve geopolitical standoffs, urging all parties to seek resolutions strictly through diplomatic negotiation.

In Tehran, officials dismissed the renewed offensive as a desperate political maneuver. Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned Washington’s threats as “economic terrorism” and violations of international norms, while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi insisted on social media that the measures would fail to force concessions from the Islamic Republic.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury is expected to detail the full enforcement mechanisms, secondary sanction penalties, and designated trade categories in a formal briefing scheduled for early next week.
