NEW DELHI — Indian business leaders, engineers, and supply chain specialists are encountering an unprecedented barrier in travel to China, with approval rates for commercial visas plunging sharply. Industry reports and corporate executives indicate that rejection rates have surged to as high as 95% for specific firms, with overall approval figures dropping to roughly 20% to 40% across key manufacturing sectors.
The tightening comes despite the recent resumption and expansion of direct passenger flights between the two countries. Sectors most heavily affected include electronics, electric vehicles, and automotive manufacturing—industries that rely heavily on Chinese technical components, factory audits, and specialized machinery. The disruption has forced several multinational enterprises to relocate strategic bilateral summits to neutral third-country hubs like Singapore, Bangkok, and Kuala Lumpur.
While Chinese Visa Application Service Centres (VASC) remain operational in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata, authorities are applying heightened scrutiny to Category M (Commercial/Trade) applications.
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Apply for a Chinese Business (M) Visa
To minimize processing delays and avoid administrative refusals, applicants must adhere strictly to the updated verification protocols:
1. Secure an Official Invitation Letter
Obtain a formal invitation letter issued by an authorized Chinese trade partner, state enterprise, or municipal commercial bureau.
The letter must be on official corporate letterhead containing:
Full applicant details (full name, gender, date of birth, passport number).
Comprehensive visit details (purpose, entry/exit dates, cities visited, commercial agenda).
Clarification of financial responsibility (specifying who covers travel and accommodation).
Host organization details (official stamp, legal representative’s signature, phone number, and address).
2. Complete the Online Application Form
Fill out the China Online Visa Application (COVA) form via the official Chinese Visa Application Service Center website.
Ensure every field matches your passport and business documents verbatim. Inconsistent details between the form and host invitation are a primary trigger for immediate rejection.
3. Prepare Mandatory Documentation
Original Passport: Valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended departure date, containing at least 2 blank pages.
Photographs: Recent color photos (33mm × 48mm) on a pure white background meeting exact biometric specifications (no glare, white clothing, or headgear).
Indian Company Deputation Letter: A signed and stamped cover letter from your employer outlining your role, purpose of visit, and guaranteeing departure upon visa expiry.
Proof of Travel & Accommodation: Flight reservations and confirmed hotel bookings matching the stated itinerary.
Financial Proof: Recent company or personal bank statements reflecting sufficient funds.
4. Book an Appointment & Submit Biometrics
Schedule an appointment via the VASC portal and submit physical documents in person at your nearest center (Delhi, Mumbai, or Kolkata).
Ten-finger biometric scans and in-person verification will be conducted during submission.
5. Track and Collect
Standard processing generally takes 4 to 7 business days, though enhanced background reviews can extend timelines beyond 3 to 4 weeks. Submitting applications at least 30–45 days prior to planned travel is strongly advised.
