COLOMBO — Sri Lanka left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya has received an official reprimand and one demerit point from the International Cricket Council (ICC) for breaching Level 1 of the Code of Conduct during the second Test against India at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground.

The disciplinary action stems from an incident on Day 2 of the ongoing World Test Championship contest. Dismissed leg-before-wicket off the final delivery of the day amid fading light, a visibly frustrated Jayasuriya struck the boundary wedges with his bat as he walked back to the pavilion.

According to an official statement from the ICC, Jayasuriya was found guilty of violating Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which pertains to the “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match.”

The charges were brought by on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, third umpire Rod Tucker, and fourth official Prageeth Rambukwella. Jayasuriya admitted the offence and accepted the proposed sanctions from Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, removing the necessity for a formal hearing.

Because this marks his first recorded disciplinary offence within a 24-month rolling period, Jayasuriya avoided a match fee deduction. Level 1 violations carry penalties ranging from an official warning to a maximum fine of 50 percent of a player’s match fee, along with one or two demerit points.

Jayasuriya becomes the third player penalized in what has proven to be a fiercely contested Test match. Earlier in the game, India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lankan fast bowler Asitha Fernando were each fined 25 percent of their match fees and assessed one demerit point following a heated physical altercation on Day 1.
