Karnataka Minister B. Nagendra Resigns Again Amid Renewed Corruption Row

Source NDTV

Bengaluru: In a dramatic political development, B. Nagendra resigned from the Karnataka Cabinet on Friday, breaking down in tears as he addressed the media. This marks the second time the senior leader has stepped down over allegations linked to the same corruption scandal, reigniting debate over accountability and governance within the state government.

Nagendra, who held a key portfolio in the cabinet, submitted his resignation to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah shortly after fresh details in the alleged scam surfaced. Sources within the government indicated that mounting pressure from opposition parties, coupled with intensifying public scrutiny, made his position increasingly untenable.

Speaking to reporters after tendering his resignation, Nagendra appeared visibly emotional. “I have always respected the law and the people’s trust. I am stepping down to ensure a fair investigation and to protect the dignity of the government,” he said, his voice trembling. He also maintained that he was innocent and would cooperate fully with the ongoing probe.

The controversy revolves around alleged financial irregularities in a government-run scheme, which had earlier forced Nagendra to step aside during a previous phase of investigation. While he was later reinstated after claiming to have cleared his name, the resurfacing of evidence has once again placed him at the center of the storm.

Opposition leaders wasted no time in targeting the ruling Congress government, accusing it of shielding tainted ministers. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders demanded a thorough and transparent investigation, stating that the resignation was “long overdue.” They also questioned why Nagendra had been re-inducted into the cabinet earlier despite unresolved allegations.

Meanwhile, the Congress leadership sought to distance itself from the controversy. Senior party officials reiterated their commitment to zero tolerance against corruption, emphasizing that Nagendra’s resignation demonstrates the government’s willingness to act decisively. “No one is above the law. The investigation will proceed without interference,” a party spokesperson said.

Political analysts believe the episode could have broader implications for the state’s political landscape. With elections not too far away, issues of corruption and governance are likely to dominate public discourse. Nagendra’s repeated resignations over the same case may also raise questions about internal vetting mechanisms and the standards of accountability within political parties.

As the investigation progresses, all eyes will be on the findings of the probe agencies. For now, Nagendra’s emotional exit underscores the high stakes of political accountability in Karnataka, while leaving the government to navigate the fallout of yet another corruption controversy.
