Middle East Tensions Boil Over: Iran Fires Ballistic Missiles at US Bases in Jordan Amid Strait of Hormuz Flare-Up

Source NDTV World

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched a wave of ballistic missiles and drones targeting United States military installations in Jordan early Wednesday, marking a sharp escalation in an ongoing regional conflict. The strikes were carried out in direct retaliation for recent US bombings of Iranian military assets on Larak Island in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

According to the IRGC, the retaliatory operation, dubbed “Punishment of the Aggressor,” heavily targeted Camp Titin, a facility utilized by the US Marine Corps on the Gulf of Aqaba, as well as the King Hussein and Al Azraq air bases. Iranian state media claimed the barrage destroyed significant technical infrastructure and attack helicopters, alleging a high number of American casualties.

However, US and regional officials strongly contradicted Tehran’s casualty claims. Two US officials confirmed that there were no American casualties resulting from the attacks. The Jordanian Armed Forces reported that their air defense systems successfully intercepted 10 of the 13 Iranian ballistic missiles that entered the kingdom’s airspace, with the remaining three landing harmlessly in remote areas.

The Catalyst: Larak Island Strikes

The Iranian retaliation was triggered by US military action earlier in the week. American forces struck two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island, a critical outpost overlooking the Strait of Hormuz. US Central Command stated that IRGC personnel were observed preparing to launch rockets carrying sea mines into the vital shipping lane, which transports roughly a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas.

US President Donald Trump confirmed the American strikes, citing them as a necessary response to Iran’s failed attempts to mine the waterway. Following Iran’s subsequent missile launch at Jordan, Trump issued a stark warning, declaring that any further Iranian escalation would be met with an even more devastating US response that would leave “very little left” of the Iranian regime.

A Widening Conflict

This latest exchange of fire shatters a tense, month-long lull in a conflict that has dragged on for over six months. The IRGC indicated that its strikes were also intended to assert Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz, warning that the US would not be able to weaken its grip through military aggression.

Simultaneous to the Jordan strikes, Iranian media reported drone attacks targeting US-linked facilities in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, while Kuwait’s military stated it was actively intercepting hostile drones in its airspace. As tit-for-tat military actions resume alongside intensifying US economic sanctions, the standoff threatens to further destabilize global energy markets and push the region closer to a full-scale war.
