New Delhi: Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo recently revealed that he had initially planned to present a unique and symbolic gift to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi—a chocolate replica of India Gate. However, the idea had to be abandoned due to practical challenges.

Speaking during his visit to India, De Croo shared that the concept was inspired by Belgium’s world-famous chocolate-making tradition and its desire to celebrate India’s iconic heritage. The proposed gift was envisioned as a detailed and artistic chocolate sculpture of India Gate, one of the country’s most recognized landmarks and a symbol of national pride.

Despite the creativity behind the plan, the Belgian leader explained that transporting such a delicate chocolate structure across long distances posed significant logistical issues. Temperature sensitivity and the risk of damage during transit were among the key concerns that led to the decision being dropped.

“Chocolate is something Belgium is globally known for, and we wanted to combine that with a tribute to India,” De Croo said, noting that while the idea was appealing, ensuring the replica reached India in perfect condition proved difficult.

The gesture, though unrealized, highlighted Belgium’s intention to strengthen cultural ties with India through a blend of tradition and innovation. Both countries share strong diplomatic and economic relations, and such symbolic ideas often reflect deeper goodwill between nations.

During the visit, discussions between the two leaders focused on enhancing cooperation in trade, technology, climate action, and innovation. Belgium remains an important partner for India within the European Union, particularly in areas such as clean energy and sustainable development.

While the chocolate India Gate did not make its way to New Delhi, the thought behind the gesture added a personal touch to the diplomatic engagement, underscoring the friendly rapport between the two nations.
