Delhi Airport Faces Severe Waterlogging After Heavy Rainfall Disrupts Operations

Source NDTV

New Delhi: Heavy rainfall in the national capital led to significant waterlogging at Indira Gandhi International Airport, disrupting normal operations and causing inconvenience to passengers on Friday. Videos circulating on social media showed flooded access roads, water accumulation near terminals, and slow-moving traffic struggling to navigate through the affected areas.

According to initial reports, intense showers lashed several parts of Delhi, overwhelming the drainage systems in and around the airport premises. As a result, vehicles faced delays entering and exiting the airport, with many passengers reporting difficulty reaching terminals on time.

Airport authorities acknowledged the situation and said that emergency response teams were deployed to manage the waterlogging and ensure passenger safety. Pumps were used to drain excess water, while traffic personnel worked to ease congestion on approach roads. Despite these efforts, several flyers experienced delays, with some flights reportedly affected due to late arrivals of passengers and crew.

Passengers took to social media platforms to share visuals and express concerns over the recurring issue of waterlogging during the monsoon season. Many questioned the preparedness of authorities, highlighting that the airport, being one of the busiest in the country, requires better infrastructure planning to handle heavy rains.

Officials stated that flight operations inside the airport remained largely unaffected, but access disruptions created logistical challenges. Airlines also issued advisories urging passengers to leave early for the airport and check flight status updates before departure.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier forecast heavy rainfall in Delhi and surrounding regions, warning of potential waterlogging in low-lying areas. Authorities have advised commuters to exercise caution and plan travel accordingly as more rain is expected in the coming days.

This incident once again brings attention to urban drainage issues in the capital, especially in critical zones like airports, where even minor disruptions can impact thousands of travelers.
