Analogue paneer, commonly referred to as “fake paneer,” is a non-dairy substitute that mimics the appearance and texture of traditional paneer. Unlike conventional paneer, which is made by curdling milk using natural acids like lemon juice or vinegar, analogue paneer is typically produced using vegetable oils, starch, emulsifiers, and other additives. While such products are not inherently illegal, problems arise when they are misrepresented as genuine dairy paneer.
Officials from the state’s Food Safety Department have highlighted that the misuse and mislabeling of analogue paneer have become widespread, particularly in restaurants, street food stalls, and bulk supply chains. Consumers are often unable to distinguish between real and synthetic paneer, leading to unintentional consumption of lower-quality substitutes that may not meet nutritional or safety standards.
