UJJAIN — Clashes erupted in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain after local authorities demolished a section of a mosque during an anti-encroachment drive, leading to stone-pelting, heightened security, and the detention of at least 15 people.
The Demolition Drive
The confrontation started when a team from the local civic administration and police arrived to remove unauthorized structures in the area. Officials stated that part of the mosque extended onto public land and that notices had been issued in advance asking the management to clear the encroachment. Heavy earthmovers were brought in to bring down the disputed boundary wall and outer section.
Tempers Flare on the Ground
As the demolition began, a large crowd gathered at the site to protest the action. Local residents argued that the action was rushed and called for immediate talks with senior officials. Heated arguments quickly broke out between the crowd and the civic team. Within minutes, the situation turned hostile, and groups began throwing stones at police personnel and municipal vehicles.
Police Move In to Restore Calm
To bring the crowd under control, police used mild force and deployed tear gas to disperse the gathering. Officers quickly secured the area, sealed off nearby entry roads, and carried out flag marches to prevent any further escalation.
Senior police officials confirmed that around 15 people were detained from the spot for disturbing public peace and obstructing government work.
Peace Meetings Underway
The district administration reported that the situation has since returned to normal, though extra security forces remain posted across sensitive points in the city as a precaution. Senior administrative officials have held peace committee meetings with community elders, urging citizens to avoid rumors and maintain harmony while legal procedures take their course.
