RBI Steps In to Protect Rupee as Dollar Soars Near ₹97

Source The Indian express

MUMBAI — India’s central bank has rolled out strict checks to stop currency traders from betting against the Indian rupee. The move came as the domestic currency slipped near the ₹97 mark against the US dollar, touching fresh lows despite recent efforts to calm foreign exchange markets.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is targeting the derivatives market—a trading space where investors often buy or sell currencies based on where they guess prices are headed next. By tightening the rules, the central bank wants to make sure people trade dollars only for genuine business needs, rather than making quick, speculative bets that drag the rupee lower.

What Is Behind the Rupee’s Slide?

The rupee has faced persistent downward pressure over the past several months, driven largely by global headwinds:

Costly Crude Oil: International oil prices have climbed above $100 a barrel. Because India imports over 80% of its crude oil, Indian refiners need more US dollars to pay for fuel shipments, creating heavy dollar demand.

A Stronger Dollar Worldwide: Global investors have rushed toward the safety of the US dollar amid geopolitical tensions and higher interest rates abroad.

Foreign Fund Outflows: Overseas investors have pulled money out of domestic stock and bond markets, converting their rupees back into dollars and adding to the currency’s slide.

How the RBI Is Clamping Down

When traders anticipate the rupee will lose value, many rush to buy dollars ahead of time. This panic-buying becomes a self-fulfilling cycle, pushing the rupee down even faster.

To break this loop, the RBI has introduced tighter oversight:

Proof of Genuine Need: Businesses must show verifiable commercial transactions—such as actual import or export contracts—before taking currency hedging positions.

Ending Quick Cancellations: Traders can no longer repeatedly book and cancel currency contracts just to ride short-term price swings.

Direct Dollar Support: Alongside rules on trading, the central bank has intervened in currency markets and opened dedicated dollar channels for state-run oil companies so their large purchases don’t rattle the open market.

What This Means for Everyday Citizens

A weaker rupee is not just a problem for big banks; it directly affects household budgets.

When the rupee loses value against the dollar, everything India imports becomes pricier. That includes crude oil, electronics, edible oils, and industrial machinery. Over time, these higher import costs filter down to higher fuel prices, costlier consumer goods, and broader inflation.

For students heading abroad or families planning foreign travel, a rate near ₹97 makes tuition fees and travel expenses noticeably steeper.

What to Watch Next

Central bank officials emphasize that the rupee is fundamentally sound and that the current drop is largely driven by global storms rather than domestic weakness.

Market watchers expect the RBI to maintain an active presence in the currency market to defend the ₹97 barrier. However, as long as global crude oil remains elevated and foreign investors remain cautious, keeping the rupee steady will remain a delicate balancing act.
