Bollywood icon Anil Kapoor has taken fans on an unforgettable trip down memory lane. Appearing on his television show India Ke Top 1%, the veteran actor surprised everyone by slipping back into the original wardrobe of his legendary 1987 sci-fi classic, Mr. India. Nearly four decades after the film hit the big screen, the beloved star revealed that he kept the original clothes safe all these years—and they still fit him just right.

Still a Perfect Fit After 39 Years

Revisiting a role from 39 years ago is rare, but stepping into the exact same garments is even rarer. Anil walked onto the stage wearing the original shirt, trousers, and jacket from the movie.

Sharing his joy with the audience, Anil said that when his production team mentioned wanting the Mr. India costume, he told them he still had the original pieces carefully preserved. “The shirt still fits me, the trousers still fit me, the jacket still fits me. After 39 years, everything still fits me!” the actor said with a grin. To make things even better, his current longer hairstyle naturally matched his look from the 1987 movie, completing the transformation effortlessly.

The Secret Behind the Famous Jacket

While movie fans might expect a superhero outfit to come from high-end fashion designers, Anil shared a surprising behind-the-scenes story about his coat.

The brown jacket was never custom-tailored in an expensive studio. Instead, Anil bought it himself from Mumbai’s famous Chor Bazaar. Known for its bustling flea market stalls and vintage finds, Chor Bazaar provided the humble, worn-in jacket that defined the kind-hearted character of Arun Verma. The simple, budget-friendly piece became an instantly recognizable piece of Indian cinematic history.

Celebrating Real-Life Superheroes

Bringing the character back was not just about cinema nostalgia; it was tied to the central purpose of the episode. Directed by Shekhar Kapur, Mr. India won hearts because Arun Verma was an ordinary man with an extraordinary heart, stepping forward to protect orphans and fight villainy.

Anil explained that the new episode pays tribute to everyday citizens who serve the country quietly without expecting rewards or fame. Recalling a conversation with cinema legend Raj Kapoor after the film first released, Anil noted: “Raj Kapoor sahab had said after seeing the film, ‘What is the takeaway from the film? The takeaway is that everyone can become Mr. India.’ This episode is about those who serve the nation as a moral duty and help build India.”

Streaming on Star Plus and JioHotstar, the show reminded viewers that true heroes do not need invisible gadgets—only a willingness to lend a helping hand.
