Pakistan Takes Over Imran Khan’s Stronghold: What You Need to Know

Source TOI

Pakistan’s political drama reached a boiling point after the central government suspended the local administration in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and placed the province under emergency rule.

The northwestern province, bordering Afghanistan, has long served as the main political base for jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). With the elected provincial government pushed aside, federal authorities have stepped in to run the region, sparking widespread protests, arrests, and legal battles.

Why Islamabad Stepped In

President Asif Ali Zardari signed off on the emergency measures after a cabinet meeting led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The federal government justified the dramatic intervention by pointing to a sharp rise in militant violence, particularly from the Pakistani Taliban (TTP).

Islamabad claimed the PTI-led administration failed to protect residents and refused to cooperate in anti-terror operations. Ministers stated that regular life in several border districts had broken down, with people afraid to leave their homes after dark. To regain control, the interior ministry deployed military troops and appointed a federally picked governor to oversee provincial affairs.

Outrage and Mass Arrests

The opposition sees the move very differently. PTI leaders labeled the decision an “undemocratic power grab” and an attack on the voters’ mandate. Party officials argued that the government is simply trying to silence them and crush demonstrations demanding Imran Khan’s release from prison.

Tensions spiked immediately after the announcement. Police detained hundreds of PTI workers and rounded up senior party leaders, including provincial officials. Security forces threw up roadblocks and shut down major highways to block an organized protest march toward the national capital, Islamabad.

How Daily Life Has Been Disrupted

For everyday citizens in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the political face-off has turned daily routines upside down. Shipping routes and intercity travel ground to a halt as container barricades blocked major motorways. Several districts closed schools and postponed university exams due to security fears.

Heavy police contingents and paramilitary forces now patrol the streets of major cities like Peshawar. While some local residents expressed frustration with the previous provincial leadership over rising insecurity, many worry that removing an elected local government will only fuel deeper public anger.

What Happens Next?

The PTI has already filed legal challenges in the Peshawar High Court to overturn the emergency order. Under Pakistan’s constitution, emergency actions and governor’s rule must gain parliamentary approval to remain in effect beyond temporary windows.

With Imran Khan still in prison and his supporters vowing to keep demonstrating, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remains at the center of an intense struggle between Pakistan’s federal leadership and a defiant opposition.
