Mid-Air Scare: Air India Flight Diverted Over False Hijack Alarm

Source India Today

An Air India flight traveling from Frankfurt to Delhi had to make an unexpected landing in Jaipur on Wednesday after transmitting a hijack alert. The emergency signal triggered an immediate security response on the ground, but authorities later confirmed the threat was a false alarm.

Emergency Landing and Quick Action

Flight AI2030, carrying approximately 300 passengers and 13 crew members, was in Indian airspace when the emergency squawk code 7500—used to indicate a hijacking—was activated. When air traffic control in Mumbai received the alert and contacted the aircraft, the pilots stated that flight operations were completely normal. However, strict aviation safety rules required the plane to be diverted immediately. It landed safely at the Jaipur International Airport and was moved to an isolated parking area for security checks.

Passengers Safe After Security Checks

Once the plane touched down, a large team including local police, airport security forces, and bomb disposal squads surrounded the aircraft. Passengers were safely escorted off the plane and taken to the terminal building. Security teams conducted a deep search of the cabin, cargo holds, and all passenger luggage. After finding no signs of danger, authorities gave the all-clear, and passengers were allowed to reboard the same aircraft to complete their journey to New Delhi.

Mystery Behind the False Alert

A formal investigation is now underway to figure out how the emergency signal was triggered. Aviation experts and senior pilots note that accidentally typing the 7500 hijack code is highly improbable, as each number must be manually entered into the system. Air traffic control officials also stated that a software glitch on the ground is unlikely with their current systems. Air India issued a statement apologizing to passengers for the unexpected delay, emphasizing that the safety and security of its flyers remain the airline’s highest priority.
