Tesla’s next-generation Roadster is drawing attention for its ambitious performance claims and planned SpaceX-inspired technology. The electric sports car is expected to offer more than just high speed, with Elon Musk suggesting that special thrusters could help it perform extraordinary movements, including short jumps and barrel rolls.
The proposed features could make the Roadster one of the most unusual electric cars ever announced. However, several of its most exciting capabilities remain unproven in a production vehicle.
SpaceX Technology Could Give the Roadster a New Edge
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has previously discussed adding SpaceX technology to the next-generation Roadster. The concept involves small rocket thrusters that could provide extra force and help the vehicle perform movements beyond the abilities of conventional sports cars.
Unlike regular electric cars, which depend on their tyres and suspension to move on the road, the proposed system could use bursts of gas to generate additional thrust.
Musk has suggested that this technology could allow the car to briefly lift off the ground. More dramatic demonstrations, such as barrel rolls, have also been discussed as part of the Roadster’s ambitious vision.
However, these ideas would require complex engineering and careful safety testing before they could be used in a real-world vehicle.
Designed for Extreme Performance
Tesla first unveiled the next-generation Roadster in 2017, promising impressive acceleration and a very high top speed. The company presented it as an electric sports car capable of competing with some of the world’s fastest performance vehicles.
The original claims included acceleration from 0 to 60 miles per hour in around 1.9 seconds. Tesla also announced a targeted driving range of approximately 620 miles under its original specifications.
These figures were ambitious targets rather than independently verified results from a production model. The car’s development and launch plans have also faced repeated delays.
The addition of SpaceX-inspired thrusters could make the Roadster even more ambitious, but its final performance will depend on the technology that Tesla eventually delivers.
Can a Car Really Jump and Perform Barrel Rolls?
A car jumping off the ground is not entirely new as a concept, but making a road-going electric vehicle do so safely is a major challenge. Rocket-based thrust would need to be controlled carefully to manage the vehicle’s balance, direction and landing.
A barrel roll would be even more complicated. The car would need enough controlled force to rotate through the air while protecting its structure and occupants.
Such movements would also raise questions about safety, stability, road regulations and where the vehicle could legally operate. The thrusters would likely be intended for specialised demonstrations rather than everyday driving.
Tesla has not yet demonstrated all these proposed capabilities in a commercially available Roadster, so they should not be treated as confirmed production features.
What Comes Next for Tesla’s Roadster?
The next-generation Roadster remains one of Tesla’s most closely watched projects because of its combination of electric performance and experimental technology.
If the company successfully brings the proposed thruster system to market, it could create a very different kind of sports car. But questions remain about its final design, production timeline, price and the availability of the most unusual features.
For now, the idea of a Tesla that can jump or perform a barrel roll remains an exciting possibility rather than a proven everyday driving experience.
The real test will come when Tesla reveals a working production-ready vehicle and shows which of its bold promises can become reality.
