NDA Sweeps Karnataka Council Polls: BJP Jibe Stings Congress After 4–0 Upset

Source NDTV

BENGALURU — Political temperatures soared across Karnataka as the Bharatiya Janata Party–Janata Dal (Secular) alliance pulled off a clean sweep in the biennial Karnataka Legislative Council elections, bagging all four contested seats across the Teachers’ and Graduates’ constituencies.

Riding high on the momentum of their 4–0 victory, the state BJP wasted no time turning the electoral triumph into viral satire, aiming a sharp barb at Deputy Chief Minister and Karnataka Congress powerhouse D.K. Shivakumar:

“DK, it’s done, bro! NDA SWEEPS 4/4 Teachers’ and Graduates’ constituencies in the MLC elections!”

The cheeky post, borrowing a widespread pop-culture meme format, spread rapidly across social media platforms, turning an already stinging electoral defeat into an uncomfortable public spectacle for the ruling government.

A Clean Sweep Across Key Constituencies

The elections represented a direct test of ground influence among educated, salaried, and professional voting blocs. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) held firm across every single seat:

Bengaluru Teachers’ Constituency: In one of the most fiercely watched battles, JD(S) candidate Ranganath captured the prestigious seat on his third attempt, defeating Congress heavyweight Puttanna by 908 votes. Ranganath secured 10,810 first-preference votes compared to Puttanna’s 9,902, turning the tide after previous losses.

West Graduates’ Constituency: Veteran BJP leader S.V. Sankanur retained his stronghold, clinching his third consecutive term by defeating Congress contender Mohan Limbikai.

Graduates’ & Teachers’ Seats: BJP candidate K.M. Suresh along with alliance partners sealed the remaining seats, closing the door entirely on Congress hopes.

Shivakumar Acknowledges Setback, Vows Review

Addressing reporters in Bengaluru shortly after the counting concluded, D.K. Shivakumar struck a measured and reflective tone. Rather than deflecting, he accepted that the final numbers fell short of internal assessments.

“We accept the verdict given by the people,” Shivakumar stated. “We had one seat out of the four seats for which polls were held, and we were hoping to win at least two. The people have sent us a message, and we will study these results thoroughly.”

He conceded that losing the bellwether Bengaluru Teachers’ seat was particularly unexpected. However, pointing to the solid vote shares achieved by Congress contenders despite the loss, Shivakumar dismissed opposition claims that the outcome foreshadowed the next Assembly elections.

“I know how to prepare our party workers,” he asserted, announcing that Congress leadership would roll out a revised roadmap and organizational overhaul starting in early November.

The Road Ahead

For the BJP–JD(S) combine, this unanimous victory represents critical proof-of-concept for their partnership, demonstrating that their combined arithmetic can outmaneuver Congress in white-collar and teacher demographics. For the Congress, while its legislative majority in the lower house remains secure, the Upper House setback delivers a clear warning: holding grassroots momentum among educated urban and semi-urban voters will require far more than routine political maneuvering.
