‘They Will Kill You’: Sonia Gandhi Looked Back at Her Desperate Plea to Stop Rajiv From Taking the Top Job

Source Hindustan Times

In the chaotic hours following the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984, the fate of India’s top office hung in the balance. Behind the hospital walls where Indira took her last breath, another intense personal drama was unfolding.

Sonia Gandhi made an emotional and desperate plea to her husband, Rajiv Gandhi, begging him not to step forward as the country’s next leader.

A Mother’s Sudden Death

The tragedy struck without warning on a bright autumn morning. Indira Gandhi was gunned down by her own bodyguards at her official residence in New Delhi. Rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), doctors fought to save her life, but the damage was fatal.

Rajiv Gandhi, who had spent years flying commercial planes before reluctantly stepping into politics after his brother Sanjay’s death, was away campaigning in West Bengal. By the time he reached the hospital in Delhi, party leaders had already decided: Rajiv had to take the oath as Prime Minister to steady a shocked and grieving nation.

Tears and Fear in the Hospital Corridor

Behind closed doors at the hospital, Sonia Gandhi saw things differently. She did not see power or political duty; she saw a death sentence.

In emotional accounts shared over the years, Sonia recounted clinging to Rajiv in a bathroom at the hospital, crying and begging him to refuse the Congress party’s call.

“They will kill you too,” she pleaded, terrified that the same violent forces that took his mother would come for him.

Rajiv, torn between his family’s safety and his sense of duty to a nation in turmoil, held his wife gently. He told her that he had no choice. The country was on the brink of violence, the government was in disarray, and walking away was not an option he could live with.

History Repeats Itself

Despite her tears, Rajiv Gandhi was sworn in that very evening as India’s youngest prime minister at age 40. Sonia stood by his side throughout his term, but the fear never completely left her heart.

Sadly, her worst nightmare came true seven years later. In May 1991, while campaigning in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, Rajiv was assassinated by a suicide bomber.

Her raw plea in the AIIMS bathroom remains one of the most poignant moments in modern Indian history—a quiet, human tragedy hidden behind the high-stakes world of national power.
