Dubai, UAE – Heart-wrenching video footage has emerged showing Wing Commander Namansh Syal of the Indian Air Force (IAF) in his last moments before the Tejas fighter jet he piloted tragically crashed during the Dubai Air Show. The clip, shared widely on social media, offers a poignant glimpse of the committed pilot just hours before his life was lost in the accident.
Smiles Before Tragedy
In one of the videos, Syal is seen smiling warmly as he poses for photographs with top Indian dignitaries, including the Minister of State for Defence, Sanjay Seth, India’s Ambassador to the UAE Deepak Mittal, and MEA Additional Secretary (Gulf) Aseem Mahajan. The informal, behind-the-scenes moments were captured by a volunteer at the event, underlining his professionalism and poise.
The Fatal Flight
The accident occurred on November 21, 2025, near Al Maktoum International Airport, during a low-altitude aerobatic display. Early reports suggest Syal attempted a negative-G manoeuvre, but the aircraft reportedly could not recover in time.
A separate, clearer video shows the Tejas performing a dramatic somersault in the air. According to experts, the pilot may have tried to eject in the final moments; the footage appears to show a parachute-like object just before the jet crashes.
Mourning and Tribute
The IAF expressed deep sorrow over the loss. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), it paid tribute to Syal’s “unwavering commitment, exceptional skill and an unyielding sense of duty.” The force has also set up a court of inquiry to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
Wing Commander Syal, aged 34, hailed from Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh. He is survived by his wife (also an IAF officer), their seven-year-old daughter, and his parents. His loss has sent shockwaves through his village and the wider defence community.
Legacy of a Warrior
In the wake of the tragedy, users on social media reacted with an outpouring of grief and respect. One post read, “Life is so unpredictable… Travel well, brother… May your final flight be peaceful.” Another said, “A warrior’s smile before the skies calls shows the courage only the brave carry within. His legacy will forever be honoured.”
As the court of inquiry begins its work, the nation mourns the loss of a courageous pilot who died doing what he loved — flying high, representing his country, and pushing the limits of skill and service.
