Rayalaseema, December 1: World AIDS Day was marked across the Rayalaseema region on Sunday with a series of awareness rallies, health camps, and community outreach programmes aimed at educating people about HIV prevention, early testing, and eliminating social stigma.
In Kurnool, the district medical and health department organised a massive awareness rally from the Collectorate to the main market area. Students, health workers, NGOs, and local volunteers participated, holding placards promoting safe practices and the importance of regular testing. District Collector S. Venkatesh urged people to “treat HIV like any other health condition” and emphasised that timely diagnosis ensures long, healthy lives for patients.
In Anantapur, government hospitals conducted free screening camps and counselling sessions. Officials highlighted that despite advancements in treatment, misinformation and fear remain major challenges. The ART (Antiretroviral Therapy) Centre at Anantapur Government General Hospital saw a higher footfall as walk-in testing was encouraged.
Kadapa district observed the day with a pledge ceremony led by senior health officials. Awareness programmes were held in schools and colleges, where medical professionals explained the modes of transmission and dispelled myths surrounding HIV/AIDS. Several NGOs collaborated with local authorities to distribute informational pamphlets in rural areas.
In Chittoor, Red Ribbon Club members from various colleges held street plays to highlight stigma faced by HIV-positive individuals. Health camps were set up across key towns including Tirupati and Madanapalle, offering free tests and counselling.
Officials across Rayalaseema reiterated that the region has made significant progress in reducing new infections but stressed that sustained awareness is key. The theme for this year’s World AIDS Day — “End Inequalities. End AIDS.” — was widely promoted during all district-level events.
Health authorities urged people to get tested regularly, follow safe practices, and support those living with HIV, reinforcing that eliminating stigma is essential in the fight against AIDS.
