The joint venture between US-based Corning Incorporated and India’s Optiemus Infracom has inaugurated its new ₹1,000-crore cover-glass manufacturing facility in Chennai, marking a major boost for the country’s electronics and smartphone components ecosystem.
The state-of-the-art plant, located in Tamil Nadu’s Sriperumbudur industrial zone, will manufacture mechanically strengthened cover glass used in smartphones, tablets, wearables, and other consumer electronics. This is Corning’s first manufacturing investment of this scale in India, aligning with the government’s vision to build a robust local supply chain for electronics production.
Officials said the new facility is expected to generate significant employment opportunities and reduce India’s dependence on imported glass components, a critical material in the smartphone manufacturing value chain. The plant will also support several leading OEMs and device manufacturers operating in the country.
Speaking at the launch, company representatives highlighted that the factory will deploy advanced equipment and specialized processes to ensure global-quality output. The venture aims to serve both domestic and export markets, further positioning India as a competitive manufacturing hub.
The investment comes at a time when India continues to push for greater self-reliance in electronics under the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. The Corning-Optiemus partnership is expected to play a key role in strengthening the component ecosystem, enabling faster production cycles and bolstering India’s position in the global supply chain.
The plant is expected to ramp up operations in phases, with full-scale production planned over the coming year.
