Deadly Border Fighting Erupts Between Pakistan and Afghanistan

Source bbc

A fresh wave of deadly clashes broke out along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border on Friday, escalating tensions between the two neighbours and raising concerns over regional stability. Initial reports indicate that multiple casualties have occurred on both sides following intense exchanges of gunfire and mortar shelling.

According to security sources, the confrontation began near the Chaman–Spin Boldak crossing, a long-disputed border point that has witnessed frequent skirmishes in recent years. The clashes reportedly started after Pakistani forces attempted to repair a damaged section of the border fence, prompting resistance from Afghan forces stationed nearby.

Local officials confirmed that civilians living close to the border were also affected. Several homes sustained damage, and residents were seen rushing to safer areas as the gunfire intensified. Emergency teams in Pakistan’s Balochistan province have been placed on high alert, while Afghan local authorities have urged people to avoid travel near the frontier.

Both governments have issued sharply worded statements. Pakistan accused Afghan forces of initiating “unprovoked and indiscriminate firing” and urged Kabul to ensure strict control of its border units. Afghanistan’s authorities, meanwhile, claimed that Pakistani troops violated territorial limits and attempted “unilateral construction,” triggering the confrontation.

The renewed violence comes at a time when bilateral ties are already strained over cross-border militancy, refugee repatriation, and disagreements regarding the Durand Line—a colonial-era boundary Afghanistan has historically declined to recognise.

Regional observers warn that unless diplomatic channels are activated quickly, the situation could spiral into a prolonged border crisis. International actors, including the United Nations, are expected to call for restraint and immediate dialogue.

As of now, both sides continue to monitor the situation closely, and additional troop deployments have been reported along key border positions. Further updates are awaited as the situation develops.
