India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav has finally addressed the long-running debate among fans over who deserves a permanent spot in the playing XI—Shubman Gill or Sanju Samson. The discussion, which has often dominated social media, resurfaced after India’s recent squad rotations, prompting Suryakumar to clarify the team’s stance.
Speaking to reporters, Suryakumar said the team management had always maintained transparency regarding selections and insisted that both Gill and Samson received “ample opportunities” to prove themselves.
> “There is no question of favouritism. Both Shubman and Sanju were given enough chances in different roles. The competition is healthy, and it ultimately helps the team,” he said.
He further added that performance under pressure and adaptability to various match situations are the most crucial factors considered during selection discussions. “We pick combinations based on the team’s needs, the opposition, and the conditions. Gill and Samson are incredibly talented, and whichever player fits the plan for that match gets the nod,” Suryakumar noted.
The skipper also praised both players for their professionalism, highlighting that internal comparisons within the squad do not affect team morale. According to him, the debate largely exists outside the dressing room.
With India preparing for a tight international calendar leading up to next year’s tournaments, Suryakumar emphasised that the focus remains on building squad depth rather than pitting players against each other.
The statement is expected to bring some clarity to fans, though discussions around the Gill–Samson showdown are likely to continue as both players fight for consistency and a long-term spot in India’s white-ball setup.
