Amazon Commits Over $35 Billion to India by 2030, Betting Big on AI and Exports

NEW DELHI, India—Amazon has announced a massive commitment to invest over $35 billion across its businesses in India by 2030, underscoring its long-term confidence in the country’s digital economy. The investment is strategically aimed at accelerating AI-driven digitization, boosting export growth, and creating large-scale employment opportunities.

The announcement, made at the sixth edition of the Amazon Smbhav Summit in New Delhi, builds upon the nearly $40 billion the e-commerce giant has already invested in India since 2010, positioning Amazon as one of the largest foreign investors in the nation.

Three Pillars of Growth

The fresh wave of capital will focus on three core strategic pillars, aligning with India’s national priorities of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) and Viksit Bharat (developed India):

AI-Driven Digitization: The company plans to expand its Artificial Intelligence capabilities to benefit millions of small businesses and shoppers. This includes democratizing access to AI tools for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to enhance their operations and customer experience. The investment will support cloud infrastructure, including the previously announced expansion of data centers in Telangana and Maharashtra.

Quadrupling Exports: Amazon has set an ambitious goal to quadruple cumulative e-commerce exports from India to $80 billion by 2030, up from the approximately $20 billion it has enabled so far. To achieve this, the company launched the “Accelerate Exports” initiative, which focuses on connecting digital entrepreneurs with manufacturers and enabling them to become successful global sellers.

Job Creation: The investment is expected to generate an additional one million direct, indirect, induced, and seasonal jobs by 2030. This growth will be driven by the scaling up of its fulfilment and delivery networks, technology development, and spillover demand across ancillary sectors like packaging, logistics, and transportation.

Economic Impact and Market Position

Amit Agarwal, Senior Vice President for Emerging Markets at Amazon, emphasized that the company’s growth in India is intrinsically linked to the country’s digital ambitions.

“We are humbled to have been a part of India’s digital transformation journey over the past 15 years… Looking ahead, we’re excited to continue being a catalyst for India’s growth,” Agarwal stated.

According to a new Economic Impact Report by Keystone Strategy, Amazon’s cumulative investments have already digitized over 12 million small businesses and supported an estimated 2.8 million jobs across India in 2024.

The scale of the latest commitment also places Amazon significantly ahead of its global rivals, being roughly twice the size of a comparable investment recently announced by Microsoft and substantially larger than Google’s planned investment in the country by 2030.

This mega-investment solidifies India’s role as a critical market and a global sourcing and innovation hub for the e-commerce titan, setting the stage for a new decade of digital and economic expansion.
