The Election Commission of India (ECI) has extended the timeline for the Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls in five States and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, while keeping the original schedule unchanged for West Bengal. The decision aims to ensure comprehensive voter registration and address administrative requirements in the affected regions.
According to officials, the extension has been granted to Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh, along with the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The revised timeline allows election authorities additional days to complete tasks such as disposal of claims and objections, updating entries, and finalising the electoral rolls.
Despite requests from some political parties and local stakeholders, the ECI confirmed that there will be no change in the existing schedule for West Bengal, where the SSR process will conclude as initially planned. The Commission clarified that the state has already met the prescribed deadlines and does not require an extension.
The updated timelines for the concerned States and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are expected to help ensure greater accuracy in voter lists ahead of upcoming electoral cycles. The final electoral rolls for these regions will be published after the completion of the extended revision process.
Officials added that the Commission remains committed to maintaining transparency and inclusivity in the electoral registration process, urging eligible citizens to verify their details and submit necessary corrections within the stipulated period.
