Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has shared a sharp and provocative review of the much-talked-about film Dhurandhar, describing it as a “warning sign” for the Indian film industry. In a series of remarks, Varma praised the film’s intent and craft while also expressing surprise over reports that actor Ranveer Singh chose to step back from the project.
Taking to social media, Varma said Dhurandhar stands out for its uncompromising approach and fearless storytelling at a time when mainstream cinema is increasingly driven by formulas and box-office calculations. According to him, the film reflects a creative courage that is becoming rare in the industry.
Calling it “incredible” that a star of Ranveer Singh’s stature stepped away from the project, Varma suggested that the decision highlights the growing gap between star-driven cinema and content-led films. “When actors hesitate to back challenging material, it sends a message about where the industry is heading,” Varma remarked, adding that Dhurandhar exposes the risks filmmakers face when attempting something unconventional.
Varma further noted that films like Dhurandhar serve as a reminder that cinema’s core strength lies in strong narratives rather than star power alone. He warned that sidelining such projects could eventually harm the creative ecosystem of Indian cinema.
While Dhurandhar has sparked debate even before its wider release, Varma’s comments have added fuel to discussions around artistic risk, commercial pressures, and the responsibilities of leading actors in shaping the future of the film industry.
As conversations around the film continue to grow, Dhurandhar appears to have achieved one thing already—forcing the industry to introspect about the balance between creativity and commerce.
