Dhaka: Shocking details have emerged in the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu man killed by a mob in Bangladesh over allegations of blasphemy, with his family alleging that some of his own colleagues betrayed him and joined the Islamist attackers.
According to local media reports and accounts from the victim’s relatives, Dipu Chandra Das was targeted after rumours spread accusing him of making derogatory remarks about religion. What began as verbal accusations quickly escalated into mob violence, culminating in his brutal lynching. The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of religious minorities in the country.
Family members allege that several of Dipu’s colleagues, instead of trying to protect him or defuse the situation, sided with the mob. “People he worked with, whom he trusted, turned against him. Some of them actively joined the attackers,” a relative told reporters, demanding a fair and transparent investigation.
Eyewitnesses said the mob grew rapidly after inflammatory messages circulated, with extremist slogans being raised. Despite pleas from onlookers, the violence continued until Dipu succumbed to his injuries. Police later arrived at the scene and dispersed the crowd, but by then it was too late.
Bangladesh police have said an investigation is underway and that multiple suspects have been identified. “We are examining all angles, including the role of individuals known to the victim,” a senior police official said, adding that arrests have been made and more could follow.
Human rights groups and minority organisations have condemned the killing, calling it a grave failure of law and order. They have urged the Bangladeshi authorities to ensure swift justice and take strong action against those spreading hate and misinformation.
The incident has sparked outrage both within Bangladesh and internationally, with calls for better protection of minorities and stricter action against mob violence fuelled by extremist ideologies.
